The Diabetes Association of Trinidad and Tobago (DATT), the NGO involved in diabetes education, prevention and community outreach activities, has announced that the association’s President, Carlton Phillip, in December by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) at the recently concluded, World Diabetes Congress held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

A special award was presented to Phillip by IDF President, Professor Jean Claude Mbanya, at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, during the congress which was attended over 15,000 delegates from over 160 member countries.

Mbanya stated that “it gives us great pleasure in presenting this award in recognition of Mr Phillip’s long-standing commitment to the fight against the expanding worldwide diabetes epidemic in his role as President of The Diabetes Association of Trinidad and Tobago and as past Chairperson of the Northwest Branch of DATT for over 22 years.”

When Phillip’s name was announced and he walked onto the stage to accept the award, a large contingent representing Caribbean diabetes associations from over 25 countries in the convention hall gave him a rousing reception, signaling their approval of this important citation for one of their own.

Phillip told his many friends and supporters in Dubai that was he surprised and truly grateful for the honour bestowed upon him by the IDF at this year’s Congress. He said is especially thankful for the opportunity to serve the diabetes community in Trinidad and Tobago, which is made possible through the continuing dedication and hard work of the DATT executive and the association’s membership, the critical support of the association’s corporate partners and DATT’s Patron, Her Excellency, Dr Jean Ramjohn-Richards.
